This is a revisit study to understand the process of collective
action in three institutional structures in forest management. These are self-initiated,
JFM-sponsored, and NGO-promoted. The first visit in 2001-2002 was undertaken with the objective to study the
strengths and weaknesses of each of three institutions. The emphasis
was on understanding the process of collective action with varying
incentive structures, impacts of different institutional structures
on equity in benefit sharing, and on monitoring the forest. Three villages from District Gadchiroli, each representing one of the three institutional set-ups, were chosen. The first study found that syntheses of the institutional structures and coordination between local communities and external agencies are important for sustainable collective action. The revisit conducted in 2007 found
that in absence of this, institutions as well as forests have
deteriorated in all the three cases.
