Socio-Economic study of six villages in Tadoba- Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR)

The dense forest area of Tadoba was declared a Sanctuary way back in 1931.  It became a Game Reserve in 1942, and a National Park in 1955. Tadoba National Park covered 116.55 sq. kms. of area. In 1986, the forest area on its southern side was declared a Sanctuary and came to be known as Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. Subsequently, under Project Tiger, the two Protected Areas got amalgamated into Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in 1995, covering 625.40 sq. kms. of land. Six villages are still located within the tiger reserve, awaiting relocation. SHODH undertook a baseline census study of these villages to study the socio-economic dimensions of villages in protected areas including occupation and income pattern of the population; and to estimate the monetary value of the forest produce used by the villagers. Findings of the study point out that the estimated average monetary value of forest produce used by each household of the six villages works out to Rs. 17,579.11 per annum.
